Firstly, unlike veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants are not required to be state licensed to practice. Every state is different, but some organizations allow vet assistants to certify through their state Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA), but this is not required. In other words, it is like an exclusive club to network with other vet assistants and get continuing education.
With capabilities that almost match that of a licensed vet tech, veterinary assistants get paid almost as much. For example, the average hourly income of a vet assistant is $1/hour less than that of a vet tech in the united states. Learn more about the average veterinary assistant salary in the US.
Length of School and Cost
To become a vet tech, you must complete two years of education at a licensed school. The cost for this can range from $35,000 to $50,000 to complete. Upon graduation, like a veterinarian, you can then sit for your boards. If you pass, you will then be considered a “licensed” veterinary technician. Veterinary assistant school range in length but are usually completed in just a few months, and for a fraction of the cost.
Finally, veterinary assistants can do nearly everything a licensed vet tech can do. Because they are not licensed by the state, there are a few things they are not allowed to do in a veterinary clinic. This includes administering anesthesia and limited assistance in surgery. Outside of that, veterinary assistants can do most everything a vet tech can do. Rules may be different in each state and should be clarified before attending school.
Reasons to Become a Veterinary Assistant
Veterinary assistants get to be hands on pet every day. For those looking to start a career they are passionate about, this is a great field that offers stability and the ability to work closely with animals.
Whether its preventative medicine or surgery, nearly every day, veterinary assistants are helping save the lives of the animals they work with. Veterinarians appreciate the value and contribution of their support staff and know they can’t do the job without them.
The medical knowledge and experience of a vet assistant makes them valuable in other niches of the pet care industry. If you decide to leave the medical side of the industry, you will be welcomed with open arms at pet hotels, day cares, and rescue groups. Veterinary assistants also make some of the most qualified pet sitters, because people trust they can better care for the health of their pet if something were to happen to them.
